連載第2回目は、合掌造り集落、原爆ドーム、厳島神社、古都奈良の4つである。

白川郷・五箇山の合掌造り集落（岐阜県、富山県）

【厳しい自然環境に育まれた独自の文化】冬の豪雪地域にあって、茅葺（かやぶ）きでつくられた大きな屋根は、角度を急勾配にして雪が降っても自重で落ちるように工夫されている。現在も、自然環境の調和した集落の中で人々が生活している。 Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama (Gifu and　Toyama Prefs.) 【A Unique Culture Nurtured in a Harsh Natural Environment】In this area of heavy winter snows, the big thatched-straw roofs are set at a steep pitch so that snow will slide off of them under its own weight. People still live in this village in harmony with the natural surroundings.

原爆ドーム（広島県）

【人類の平和を願う記念碑】1945年に人類史上初めて使用された核兵器の傷あとを伝える建造物である。中央のドーム部分の外壁を残し、建物の本体部分はほぼ全壊した。人類の平和を願うシンボルとしての価値が評価された。 Hiroshima Peace Memorial (Genbaku Dome) (Hiroshima Pref.) 【A Memorial Seeking Peace for All Mankind】The Genbaku Dome conveys the damage caused by the atomic　weapon used here in 1945, the first in human history. The outer wall　of the central dome was left behind, but the rest of the main structure　was almost completely destroyed. This site is prized for its value as a　symbol of the desire for peace among all humanity.

厳島神社（広島県）

【入り江の海に立つ大鳥居と社殿】瀬戸内海の島を背後にして、その入り江の海の中に朱塗りの大鳥居と社殿が建ち並ぶ日本でも珍しい神社。社殿構築は12世紀に始まり、その後焼失し1241年に再建。島全体が神聖視されている。 Itsukushima Shinto Shrine (Hiroshima Pref.) 【Main Shrine and Giant Torii Gate Standing in an Ocean Cove】Set against an island of the Inland Sea, this Shinto shrine, whose main　building and giant torii gate are painted in vermillion and set in an　ocean cove, is rare even in Japan. Shrine construction began in the　twelfth century, but the shrine was then lost to fire and rebuilt in　1241. The entire island is considered sacred.

古都奈良の文化財（奈良県）

【唐との交流も踏まえ日本文化の原型が形成】奈良は、710年から784（or794）年までの日本の首都であった。日本古来の神道や日本に伝わりその後独自の発展をとげた仏教など日本の宗教空間が形つくられた。 Historic Monuments of the Ancient Capital, Nara (Nara Pref.) 【The Prototype of Japanese Culture was Formed Partly through　Exchange with Tang China】Nara was the capital of Japan from 710 to 784 (or 794).
